Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed a KES 500,000 fine upon Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia following their fans’ alleged unsporting and offensive behavior during a CAF Confederations Cup match against Rwandese side Rayon Sports on August 19, 2018, at the MISC Kasarani.
The decision was arrived at a CAF Disciplinary Board meeting in Cairo, Egypt, following examination of match reports submitted to the board.
“The spectators were good until the second goal of Rayon Sport when the Gor Mahia supporters threw bottles of water and other objects at the players,” read part of the letter sent to FKF General Secretary/CEO Robert Muthomi.
“In accordance with Article 83.1 and 83.2 of the CAF Statutes and Regulations, the CAF Disciplinary Board has thus decided to impose upon your club a financial sanction of KES 500,000 for the unsporting and offensive behavior of your fans,” noted CAF in the letter signed by Secretary General Amr Fahmy.
The decision can, however, be contested before the CAF Appeal Board.
Gor Mahia bowed out of the tourney following back to back defeats to Rayon Sports and USM Alger despite enjoying an early group lead. They will, however, have a chance to make amends in the 2019 CAF Champions League after successfully defending the Kenyan Premier League title.
