2019 AFCON Qualifiers: Harambee Stars go down away in Sierra Leone

    Harambee Stars narrowly lost 2-1 to Sierra Leone in the first match of the 2019 AFCON Qualifiers played today, 10 June 2017 in Freetown, Sierra Leone

    Stars went into the match on the back of an 11-match unbeaten run. The away side would threaten early on, in the 15th minute, through an effort from close range by debutant Masoud Juma that Sierra Leone goalkeeper Zombo Morris managed to keep out

    The home side, however, responded seven minutes later; Gibrilla Wobay sending in a low shot into the bottom right corner after good work from the left flank by Kei Kamara

    Matters got worse in the 43rd minute when defender Brian Mandela was sent off after bringing down Kei Kamara. The first half ended 1-0 in favor of the home team

    On resumption, Coach Stanley Okumbi pulled out Masoud Juma for David Ochieng. Stars, despite being a man down, controlled proceedings for the better part of the half but would fall further behind to a goal by skipper Ibrahim Bangura from the spot in the 68th minute

    Michael Olunga pulled a goal back through a sublime freekick to make it 2-1 with 18 minutes to play, to arouse hope for a comeback but the home side held on for a win

    Group F

    Harambee Stars still has five matches to play, with the matches set to be played in March, September, October and November 2018. Kenya has been pooled against Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Ethiopia in Pool F
