Rising Stars selection exercise ends ahead of Egypt friendlies

Part of the action during the selection exercise that kicked off on Monday. The final squad shall start preparations next week

A total of 99 players have from Monday, February 19, to Thursday, February 22, 2018, had a chance to audition for the National U20 football team, the Rising Stars. The players were scouted from the ongoing Chapa Dimba na Safaricom Youth Tournament as well as the FKF Leagues.

The first batch of 50 players was tried on February 19th and 20th 2018, while the second batch got their chance on Wednesday, February 21st and Thursday, February 22nd, 2018 at the MISC Kasarani.

The exercise, spearheaded by Harambee Stars interim coach Stanley Okumbi, was aimed at constituting a National U20 football team set to compete in upcoming Africa Youth Championships.

“Youth development remains key in our long-term agenda,” said FKF CEO Robert Muthomi.

“That is why we have not only put in place an elaborate scouting network that ensures no deserving player is left out, but that we also find quality players within the required age bracket,” he added.

Egypt, Tanzania friendlies

The team is set to face neighbors Tanzania in a build up friendly match in Dar es Salaam, before taking on Egypt in a two-legged friendly match, scheduled for next month.

“These friendlies will provide an opportunity for our junior players to not only experience international matches but also learn vital aspects of the game that are key to their future football development,” explained Mr. Muthomi.

The matches are in preparation for the upcoming Africa Youth Championships.
