Ushuru opened up a four-point gap between them and second-placed Western Stima following a 3-2 win over the latter in an FKF National Super League match played on Saturday, June 30, 2018, at the Ruaraka Grounds.
The match, which saw both sides miss from the spot, lived up to the billing, with four of the five goals having been scored from set pieces.
Evans Maliachi gave Ushuru a 24th minute lead from a free kick, a lead that only lasted six minutes when Erastus Mwaniki restored parity. Fan Ngaira would, however, get Ushuru back on the front foot in the 39th minute for a 2-1 halftime lead.
Upon resumption, the hosts resorted to sitting back but were undone by a freekick by Kevin Okoth in the 85th minute.
Just as the match seemed to be ending in a share of the spoils, Ushuru won a freekick just outside the box. Oscar Mbugua calmly slotted it in much to the chagrin of the guests’ technical bench.
In another match played at the same venue, Kangemi All-Stars were held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Nakuru All-Stars, with both goals having been scored from the spot.
Ivan Anguyo gave the hosts the lead from the spot, with Geoffrey Maina restoring parity in similar fashion to ensure a share of the spoils.
St Joseph Youth also managed a 3-1 win over GFE 105 in Nakuru. Daniel Kamau, Adam Fadhili and John Elembo were on target for the hosts, with Hezron Ochieng’s 49th-minute equalizer from the spot turning out to be a mere consolation.
In Kisumu, hosts Kisumu All-Stars were held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Coast Stima.
Two matches were played on Friday, June 29, 2018, with KCB and Nairobi City Stars emerging victors over Modern Coast Rangers and FC Talanta respectively. Three more will be played on Sunday, July 1, 2018, to sum up round 20 action.
