Kenya national team for CECAFA U20 Women Championships named

Preparations for the CECAFA U20 Women Championships, which Kenya is set to host, have kicked off, with the naming of 36 players set to take part in a selection exercise.

The list largely features top performers from the Chapa Dimba na Safaricom Youth Tournament, among them St. Mary’s Ndovea’s Nuru Hensley, Bishop Njenga’s Lavenda Murumwa, Barcelona Ladies’ Jane Njeri, and Kwale Girls’ Joy KingLady, who all made the team to Spain with the Chapa Dimba All-Stars.

Solwigidi’s Micky Khode and Mathare United Women’s Teresia Lundu have also made the cut.

The selection exercise is set to kick off on May 18, 2019, at the Barclays Sports Club in Nairobi. The tournament, meanwhile, is set to be played in July this year, in Kenya.

In 2017, the team took part in the U20 World Cup qualifiers, falling to Ghana in the final qualifying round. The Junior Starlets had breezed past Botswana in the first round (7-1 on aggregate) before edging out Ethiopia 4-3 on aggregate in the second round.
