SportPesa Cup defending champions Kariobangi Sharks stood firm against English Premier League side Everton, eventually winning 4-3 in post-match penalties in a historic clash played on Sunday, July 7, 2019, at the MISC Kasarani. The match ended 1-1 in regulation time.

Sharks showed more intent in the first half and deservedly went a goal up when Duke Abuya beat the offside trap before sending a low drive through the legs of Everton goalie Martin Stekelenburg.

Joe Williams then got the visitors back level with a smart freekick that went low past Brian Bwire’s fingertips, just seven minutes into the second half.

Everton showed more promise thereafter but resolute defending by Sharks, coupled with occasional runs on the break, saw the match end even.

In the ensuing shootout, Brian Bwire proved decisive, saving two and scoring the final punt to see Sharks claim a historic win over the Toffees.

The match comes as both sides get set for the upcoming 2019/2020 season, set to kick off in August this year.
