The Kenya U17 national team, Junior Starlets, took a significant step towards making history by securing qualification to the fourth and final round of the 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
The team clinched a decisive 3-0 victory against Ethiopia on Sunday, May 19, 2024 at Ulinzi Sports Complex.
Captain Elizabeth Ochaka, led from the front by setting the tone of the match, heading home a goal in the 44th minute, giving Kenya a crucial halftime lead. Her strike boosted the team’s confidence even more heading into the second half.
In the 55th minute, Velma Awuor extended the lead with a well-executed goal, pushing their momentum.
Victory was sealed in the 70th minute when Lorna Faith found the back of the net. This win propels the Junior Starlets into the fourth round of the qualifiers, bringing them just one step away from a historic first-ever World Cup qualification.
The next challenge for the Junior Starlets is a crucial tie against Burundi in the final round of the 2024 World Cup qualifiers.
This match will determine whether Kenya can secure its place on the global stage and compete in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup for the first time.
