Gor Mahia FC and Kenya Police FC have triumphed in their respective continental assignments proceeding to the second preliminary round of matches. These victories mark a positive step for Kenyan football on the international stage.
Gor Mahia showcased a remarkable performance in the CAF Champions League, overcoming a 1-0 deficit from the first leg against South Sudan’s El Merreikh. Playing on home turf at Nyayo Stadium today, Sunday, August 25, 2024, Gor Mahia secured a commanding 5-1 victory, resulting in a 5-2 aggregate win.
Despite conceding an early goal in the 8th minute, Gor Mahia quickly responded, with Austine Odhiambo assisting Christopher Ochieng to equalize just a minute later.
Alpha Onyango then gave Gor Mahia the lead with a goal in the 21st minute, bringing the aggregate score to 2-2. In the 34th minute, Sharrif Musa won a free kick, which Austine Odhiambo delivered into the box, allowing Alphonce Omija to score, putting Gor Mahia ahead.
Gor Mahia continued to threaten with Paul Ochuoga hitting the post and Shariff seeing his goal ruled for offside. The team went into half time with a a 3-1 advantage.
The second half witnessed a brace from Ronney Onyango with goals in the 80th and 93rd minutes giving Gor Mahia a 5-1 victory on the day and a 5-2 aggregate triumph. Gor Mahia proceed to play Egypt’s Al Ahly SC in the second preliminary round.
On the other hand, Kenya Police FC also secured a place in the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup with a solid 1-0 win over Ethiopia Coffee SC, thanks to a goal from Rashid Toha in the first half.
This victory propels Kenya Police FC to the second preliminary round, where they will face Egypt’s Zamalek in another two-legged tie.
Both Gor Mahia FC and Kenya Police FC will be eager to secure their spots in the group stages of their respective tournaments. The second preliminary round of matches will played on September.
