The fifth edition of the CAF B coaching course concluded today, marking a significant achievement for 25 coaches who have successfully graduated from the four-month-long program. Among the graduates is David Mbugua, the current lead scout for AC Horsens in Kenya and Africa.
Reflecting on his experience, Mbugua emphasized the importance of the training he received throughout the course. “Through these four months, we have been educated on new methodologies that we’re ready to apply in our clubs and youth teams,” he shared.
Mbugua’s journey in football has been marked by an interesting transition—from youth coaching to becoming a full-time scout. Explaining the shift, Mbugua said, “As a youth coach, you have access to around 20 or 30 players at a time. But as a scout, Kenya becomes your oyster. I now have the chance to impact the lives of talented Kenyan players on a much larger scale.”
The CAF B course, which focuses on developing advanced coaching skills, has also given Mbugua a new perspective on his role as a scout.
“Scouting is the first facet of coaching. You have to select the right players, and with the knowledge from this course, I now look at players differently. It has changed how I visualize and assess them. I can also influence coaches to play a player in a certain position where I see their potential being maximized,” Mbugua added.
For Mbugua, this course has equipped him with a “different lens” for evaluating talent—one that will enable him to contribute more effectively to the development of players and Kenyan football as a whole.
