With the dust now settled from the U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt, Kenya’s Rising Stars have every reason to hold their heads high. Their maiden appearance on the continental stage wasn’t just about participating, it was about making a bold statement.

From the moment they stepped onto the pitch, the Rising Stars brought energy, determination, and a fearless spirit that captured the hearts of fans back home. They didn’t just show up, they competed.

A Team on the Rise

This journey reflects the strength and promise of Kenya’s growing youth football pipeline. The current squad has steadily built on the momentum of previous U18 campaigns, having first come together during the 2023 CECAFA U18 Boys Championship held in Kisumu and Kakamega, where they delivered an impressive performance to finish as runners-up.

Several members of that U18 squad went on to feature prominently in the U20 AFCON CECAFA Qualifiers in Tanzania, once again finishing second after a hard-fought final against the hosts. Their consistent progression highlights the development within the ranks, and the U20 AFCON stage served as a powerful testament to how far this group has come.

Going Toe to Toe with Africa’s Best

Drawn into a challenging group featuring Morocco, Tunisia and Nigeria, the Rising Stars did not shy away from the pressure. Instead, they went toe to toe with some of the continent’s most established footballing nations, proving they belong on this stage. Whether it was battling for every ball or launching quick, incisive attacks, Kenya brought flair and firepower in equal measure.

Standout Players

Across just three matches, Kenya lit up the tournament with their attacking flair and fearless play. The Rising Stars proved to be a constant threat in the final third, showing no shortage of goals.

Leading the front line was Lawrence Okoth, who scored twice with clinical precision, consistently finding pockets of space and converting under pressure. Beja Hassan was equally electric, contributing two goals and an assist while tormenting defenders with his pace and sharp movement.

Anchoring the defense was Manzur Okwaro, whose composure and tactical awareness brought much-needed stability at the back. His timing in challenges and ability to read the game made him a standout performer in every match.

Wangaya Kevin awarded MOTM against Nigeria

Kevin Wangaya stood out as the heartbeat of the team. His vision and creativity allowed Kenya to control games and carve out scoring opportunities. His efforts didn’t go unnoticed—he was named in the tournament’s Team of the Group Stage and earned the Man of the Match award in the clash against Nigeria.

More Than Just a Debut

For the Rising Stars, this wasn’t just about results. It was about making history, learning, and setting the stage for future triumphs. The team showed that Kenya’s youth talent is not only promising but also capable of matching the best on the continent.

Speaking after the tournament, coach Salim Babu said:

“This tournament was a big learning curve for us, but also a strong indication that our players can compete at the highest level. The character, the goals, the fight—they all showed that the future is very bright for Kenyan football.”

The players will carry with them invaluable experience, unforgettable memories, and the pride of a nation that rallied behind them. Their journey is just beginning but already, they’ve lit the path for the next generation.
