In preparation for the upcoming 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN), the Confederation of African Football (CAF) successfully concluded a two-day Senior Supervisors Commanders’ Workshop in Nairobi held on May 29 and 30, 2025. This initiative is part of CAF’s broader strategy to enhance stadium safety and security across the continent.

Led by Dr. Christian Emeruwa, Head of CAF’s Safety and Security Department, the workshop brought together 40 senior security personnel from the National Police Service, Ministry of Sports, and Ministry of Interior Coordination. The training focused on the unique security requirements of football events, emphasizing that traditional policing methods differ from those needed for managing large sporting tournaments.

“In terms of personnel, what we have seen is impressive and commendable. We are happy with the people we have trained. They have been very positive and receptive in terms of the training and we are confident that we have the right people,” Dr. Emeruwa remarked.

He added; “For us it is very important to get all the security stakeholders in a room and expose them to the CAF way of doing things. We are not here to teach them how to police the country. Football has its own security requirements and programs which are not openly available to the conventional police.”

The workshop culminated in a practical session at Nyayo National Stadium, one of the key venues for CHAN 2024. Participants were trained on crowd control measures, including managing spectator entry and ticket verification processes.

This Nairobi workshop follows similar sessions held in Tanzania and Uganda, reflecting a regional commitment to ensuring the safety and success of CHAN 2024, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Additionally, there are more specialized training opportunities to follow for stewards, private security operations, stadium security operations, training site security operations, hotel and airport security operations and more.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and security officers  continues to collaborate closely with CAF and local security agencies to ensure that all preparations meet international standards, aiming to provide fans, players, and officials with a secure and enjoyable tournament experience.
