The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has provided key clarifications and rulings concerning promotion issues affecting clubs in the FKF Division Two Western Zone and FKF Division One League. The decisions follow recent reviews by the Leagues and Competitions Committee to ensure that all promotions within the federation’s competitions align with established regulations and the principle of sporting merit.

FKF Clarifies Division Two Western Zone Promotion Slots

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has clarified the number of promotion slots allocated to the FKF Division Two Western Zone. Initially, the Zone had been allocated ten (10) slots following the league’s expansion. However, it has since been confirmed that MMUST FC and Samitsi FC had already earned promotion to the FKF Division One League 2025/26 after winning their play-offs held earlier in June 2025. As a result, the Western Zone will now have eight (8) available promotion slots instead of ten (10).

Leagues Committee Decision on Chebaiywa FC Promotion

The FKF Leagues and Competitions Committee has ruled on the case involving the promotion of Lions FC, formerly known as Chebaiywa FC, to the FKF Division One League. After deliberations, the Committee found that the change of name from Chebaiywa FC to Lions FC was not done procedurally and therefore cannot be effected. It also ruled that Lions FC’s promotion was against the principle of sporting merit, as promotion and relegation should solely depend on on-field performance. Consequently, the promotion of Lions FC has been revoked, and the FKF Competitions Department has been directed to reinstate Chebaiywa FC in the FKF Division One League fixtures.

Leagues Committee Decision on Kakuma United FC Promotion

Similarly, the Committee delivered its decision on the case involving the promotion of Riverside FC, formerly Kakuma United FC, to the FKF Division One League. The Committee determined that the name change was not conducted in accordance with FKF procedures and that the team’s promotion contravened the principle of sporting merit. Therefore, Riverside FC’s promotion has been revoked, and the FKF Competitions Department instructed to reinstate Kakuma United FC in the Division One League fixtures for the 2025/26 season.

Leagues Committee Decision on Bondeni FC Promotion

The FKF Leagues and Competitions Committee has also made a ruling regarding the promotion of Bondeni FC to the FKF Division One League. After reviewing the structure and communication surrounding the FKF Division Two Western Zone, the Committee established that MMUST FC and Samitsi FC had already earned promotion through play-offs, and the zone was only entitled to an additional eight (8) slots following the league’s expansion. The Committee therefore directed that Bondeni FC’s promotion be set aside, and the earlier communication issued by the FKF Secretariat on September 26, 2025, regarding the number of slots per zone, be voided. A revised clarification has been ordered to be issued to the FKF Division Two Western Zone based on the confirmed facts.
