Football Kenya Federation has launched the women’s football strategy on Wednesday, July 14, 2021, which will help highlight and grow the massive potential of women’s football in Kenya.

The launch brought together all stakeholders of women football in which the Head of the Women Football department, Doreen Nabwire took them through what the strategy entailed.

During his time in office, FKF President Nick Mwendwa embarked on a journey to positively transform women football, through adopting statutory obligations and research-based regulatory frameworks, meant to promote and support women’s football, with a focus on increasing the number of women actively participating in the sport and providing the much-needed opportunity for women to occupy key decision making positions, both at board room and technical developmental level.

“We re-introduced Women Football competitions, that played a key role in ensuring Kenya’ s qualification for the  2016 Africa Women Cup of Nations and winning the 2019 CECAFA Women Championships, these achievements coupled with an increased number of our female football players scouted in some of Europe’s top leagues and the need to cement the country’s position as a women footballing powerhouse, has prompted the crucial need for a strategic approach, aimed at holistically and consistently developing the women’s game, in order to complete, sustain, and continuously grow its success both at the national and grassroots level,” said Mr. Mwendwa.

He continued to say, “Through this strategy, we hope to exploit, grow and develop the Women’s game and guide Kenya’s vision of qualifying for the Women’s World Cup for the first time ever.”

“We will be working with all women football stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of this strategy, ” FKF Vice President Doris Petra.

With a vision to rise in CAF and FIFA rankings, a mission to popularize the game and make it the number one choice for girls/women’s team sports in the country, professionalize the entire scope of the women’s game, and ensure regular qualification to all major regional and international tournaments.

This strategy aims to develop five key pillars, that is, Grassroots and Youth Football, Leagues and Competitions/ Club licensing, National teams/ Centers of Excellence, Capacity Building, and Marketing & Branding of women football.
