Kisii hosts Chapa Dimba na Safaricom Nyanza region semifinals

The Semi-finals for Nyanza Region Chapa Dimba Na Safaricom youth tournament went down on Saturday, December 9, 2017, at Gusii Stadium in Kisii County.

Eight teams took part in the tournament which aims at scouting for talent, developing grassroots football, and ultimately propelling gifted players to the national team.

Awendo Academy from Migori qualified for finals after scoring two goals against Nyamira Super Eagles from Nyamira as Ombek Red Devils from Rachuonyo managed 1-0 win over Manyatta Boys from Kisumu. Awendo Academy and Ombek Red Devils will face off in the finals on Sunday.

Girls’ Category

In the girls’ category, Plateau Queens from Nyando and Migori’s Ugari Starlets will face off in the finals. Ugari Starlets edged out Ekerenyo 2-1 as Plateau Queens from Nyando got a 4-1 win over Omobera from Gucha.

The winning teams from Sunday’s final will each receive a cash reward of Shs 200,000 and a chance to progress to the national final expected to take place in the first quarter of 2018.

“This marks the third regional finals after Narok and Embu for the Rift Valley and Eastern finals and we have truly seen immense talent. Not only are we seeing top-notch skills on display but football fans are also coming out in huge numbers to support their teams. We have seen amazing action on the ground today and we hope a number of these players will be tapped into our national teams,” said Nick Mwendwa, Football Kenya Federation President.

Two players from Rift Valley region champions, Kapenguria Heroes have already been called up to join a Kenya Premier League Side. David Majak who was the top scorer in Narok and Fredrick Krop have both been signed up by Kakamega Homeboyz ahead of the new 2018 season.

“So far we have seen some wonderful football talent across the country. Already, the Rift region has produced Kapenguria Heroes and Tar Tar girls for the national grand finale. Mwingi Junior Academy and Ngakaa Talent Center have also emerged from the hotly contested Eastern regional finals. We wish all the boys and girls the very best as they prepare to contest for Nyanza region supremacy tomorrow,” said Sylvia Mulinge, Director -Consumer Business, Safaricom.

At the grand finale, the winning teams will walk away with Sh1 million each and an opportunity to go for an international training and mentorship camp in London in April 2018.

Safaricom has invested Sh100 million towards the program which includes Sh10m worth of prizes as well as funds for the renovation of select community pitches through a legacy programme.
