FKF President Nick Mwendwa has on Saturday, February 17, 2018, presided over the launch of a Taita Taveta County football team by Governor Granton Samboja at the Wundanyi Stadium.
The event was also graced by among others, Wundanyi MP Danson Mwashako, Sofapaka FC President Elli Kalekwa, Harambee Stars Assistant Coach Stanley Okumbi and Taita Taveta CEC for Sports Bigvai Mwailemi, who also doubles up as FKF Taita Taveta sub-branch secretary.
Governor Samboja pledged noted that it was his dream and that of his fellow leaders to have a county football team, further pledging support by the county government.
“This long-term project we have undertaken is a dream we had envisioned, as a way of empowering the youth,” said the Governor.
“We shall do everything within our means to give you the necessary support that will enable you (Taita Taveta All-Stars players) showcase your talent,” he pledged.
FKF President lauded the county for giving an opportunity for giving a sporting chance to its youth. He also mentioned FKF’s commitment to football development from the grassroots.
“We are working together with the county government to give youth an opportunity to play, in line with our long-term agenda of raising the levels of the game from the grassroots,” said FKF President Nick Mwendwa at the launch.
44 players have been selected for trials with the team. The squad set to be trimmed to 25 players who will make up the final team set to represent the county in FKF Leagues.
