2017 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup Champions Harambee Stars were today, December 18, 2017, treated to a luncheon by Football Kenya Federation at a Nairobi hotel.
This comes after the team edged out Zanzibar 3-2 in post-match penalties after a 2-2 draw in regulation time. Patrick Matasi was the hero, saving three spot-kicks to hand Stars victory at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
The team was awarded gift vouchers worth ksh 10,000 each by retail chain Tuskys, through CEO Dan Githua. SportPesa CEO Capt. Ronald Karauri also honoured a pledge of ksh 3 Million as prize money for Harambee Stars’ triumph.
“We want to start a journey with Harambee Stars. We can collectively do a lot in sports for national cohesion” said Tuskys CEO Dan Githua.
SportPesa CEO Ronald Karauri congratulated the team on achieving the feat unbeaten and further, pledged to support the team going forward.
“We are very proud of the win. For as long as we can, we will keep supporting Kenyan football,” said Capt Karauri.
Kenya last won the Cup in 2013 at the Nyayo National Stadium after a 2-0 win over Sudan. The 2017 edition was once again held on home soil, and FKF President Nick Mwendwa expressed his gratitude to the partners who made the event a success
“I am grateful to the Ministry of Sports, County Government of Machakos and County Government of Kakamega. They were instrumental in the smooth running of the tournament,” said FKF President Nick Mwendwa.
